Grade: 5 (pts 11–14) £28,142 - £29,540 pa pro rata

Teaching Assistant – Fixed term contract (9am -12.45pm)


To support a child in Year 3 with medical needs and autism. The child is working at the expected level for their age, is sociable and can access the curriculum, with support to manage sensory needs - including breaks from the learning environment.

Training to support their medical needs will be provided and previous medical experience, although desirable, is not essential.  The child has a complex range of physical and health needs and is supported by various health and educational professionals: 

 

  • The child has a heart condition
  • They are being monitored for an unsafe swallow, so 80-90% of their dietary intake is via a Peg j/g & pump feeding system
  • They have cyclic vomiting syndrome
  • They have gastroparesis
You will be responsible for:

 

 

  • preparing and administering their food through a tube to a Peg J or gastro from a backpack that they wear.
  • monitoring play to ensure the tube is not dislodged
  • keeping their stoma port clean when necessary
  • administering medication via the Peg g
  • supporting with self care - toileting (the child is able to use the toilet independently but may need support to keep themselves clean) and with managing vomiting  when the child is having an episode. During the episode, changing drainage bags
  • ensuring the child doesn't get out of breath and supporting them to rest when necessary
  • monitoring the colour of the child's lips, ensuring they're not blue / purple.
All of the child's needs are detailed on a Health Care Plan. Another member of school staff is fully trained to support this child and is responsible for their 1:1 care in the afternoons.

 

You will work well as part of a team and be able to follow instructions from the teacher and also be confident to use your initiative where necessary. You will have good subject knowledge / a willingness to learn. You will be skilled in developing positive relationships with parents, staff and with the children you work with.
